The Beauty of Joe Hisaishi

As a major fan of Studio Ghibli growing up, Joe Hisaishi has had a profound influence in my life not only as a passionate enthusiast for Japanese animation, but as someone who has an avid appreciation for emotionally compelling music. Music for me is a way of storytelling with instruments and sound. When these components are put together with visuals it creates a mesh of two worlds that come to life. I played the violin for a few younger years in my life and I always found the string symphonies to be quite whimsical. Instead of a paintbrush on canvas or pen to paper, music is the love letter of one's feelings on the sounds that embody one as whole. The amount of time one practices to perfect their craft is immensely challenging, yet satisfying once the work is polished. Aside from Studio Ghibli films, Hisaishi has done other amazing compositions such as "la piogga", "HANA-BI" and "Cinema Nostalgia" just to name a few. Many of Hisaishi's scores have a grandiose feeling in which he makes a few piano notes fill a silent room with sadness, hope, or intense passion. He is one of the few composers that has really spoken to my inner love for music overall. I find that many people don't appreciate classical music as much as in the past. However, I think Hisaishi has a blend of old musicians that fit within today's modern period. Classical and film music have the power to draw an audience with the gravitational pull of feelings you may have never felt before. It can whisk you away to a nostalgic part of life, surprise you into a new period in life, or shower happiness in the most unexpected ways. I can instantly picture a story coming to my mind with each of his songs and the unique melodies that link one another effortlessly.
